A New Enemy

When A New Day Begins...

Another Fight Awakens...

Chapter 17 - Vampire News

Edward held the door open as I entered. Both of us walked towards the living room. I immediately noticed the Denali by the couch with Carlisle, they seemed to be talking. I couldn't fins Esme, Jasper or Alice, but Rosalie and Emmett were by the stairs. Rosalie seemed annoyed. Edward and I came closer as Carlisle turned to greet us, "Hello Bella."

"Hello." I said, feeling uneasy.

"Where's Alice & Jasper?" Edward asked.

"They're out hunting. They'll be back shortly." Carlisle and Edward then paused and stared at each other. Then Edward nodded, and Carlisle walked over to Esme. I was curious, but I didn't want to ask. I looked over to my left, looking at the Denali. I immediately recognized Tanya, with her blonde hair. I knew that the girl with bright red eyes was Bree, she looked tense but comfortable at the same time.

"Do you want to sit down?" Edward asked, aware that I was leaning on the couch.

"Yeah," I said as I sat down. Edward sat next to me, he seemed worried about something. "What's wrong?" I asked.

He chuckled a bit, "Usually I would ask that...it worries me with Bree here. On how she would react with you around."

"But hasn't she adjusted to being a vegetarian already?"

"She did, but she is just like Jasper. Just with more power and less control. You'll have to stay by my side."

I looked over Edward's shoulder and met with Bree's eyes. She just heard everything we said. She mouthed the words 'Don't worry' and continued her conversation with Tanya. I looked back at Edward and noticed he was staring at something or someone behind me, I turned my head to see. Alice & Jasper soon came in through the kitchen. Alice smiled and rushed over to hug me. Jasper followed but stayed a few feet behind. "Hey Bella! Sorry we're late."

I stood and hugged Alice, "It's okay, I just got here."

"Well, now that everyone's here....Eleazar?" Carlisle said.

The man next to Tanya nodded. He was facing Edward and I as he spoke, "We heard that here in Forks, there is a much greater group of vampires. Despite that, there is an alarming increase rate of newborn vampires in Alaska, it recently has decreased, but we don't know who or what is behind that. If the Volturi hears any of this, they might come. We have to stop the person making vampires, and make sure that the new vampire group is unnoticed."

"The Volturi?" I asked Edward.

"The 3 men I showed you before in Carlisle's library. They are Caius, Marcus and Aro. They are basically the royalty of vampires. They have the wives, and the guards too. You never mess with them unless you want to die." Edward said.

"They set up rules that us vampires have to follow," Eleazar said. "Like to make our existence unknown to the humans, but you, have already discovered that. If the Volturi were to find out, they would get rid of you. They wouldn't trust a human to keep our kind a secret."

"Isn't there something we can do to prevent the Volturi from coming here?" Alice asked.

"We can try decreasing the number rate of newborn vampires. We also have to make sure that the new group here in Forks, goes around unnoticed. If not, then the Volturi will arrive."

Everyone became silent as they thought of the possibilities of what might happen. Everyone knew one thing though...I was the only one with any real danger.

-------

I walked over to Carlisle and asked him more about the Volturi. "What are they like? Are..are they like James and Victoria?"

Carlisle chuckled a bit, "No, like Edward said, they are basically the royalty of vampires. They set up a few rules that we have to follow. The Volturi is made up of Caius, Marcus and Aro. Caius & Marcus are usually silent, so Aro speaks up most of the time. They have a guard too. It is made up of the most elite vampires out there. Most of them have rare abilities that Aro finds fascinating or he is just fond of them."

"What do they feed on? Are they vegetarians too?"

"Sadly, no. They feed on humans, but any of the humans that live in the city they are in. They gather humans from different areas or from a different city."

"City?"

"The Volturi live in Volterra. They protect any human that lives in Volterra, so if you were to try and feed on a human there, the Volturi will find out and "take you away."

"Oh," I absorbed all this in, trying to remember just in case if I turn into a vampire. I was about to ask another question when suddenly my stomach growled, why now?

"Go ahead into the kitchen, Esme's already making you some food." Carlisle said.

"Thank you." I stood and headed for the kitchen, the aroma of garlic filled the room. I looked at what Esme was cooking and it was spaghetti with white sauce. I couldn't wait to eat.

-------

Edward parked in the driveway, I noticed one the windows of the house was disturbed, which meant Charlie was watching us.

"Are you staying tonight?" I asked Edward.

"I have to drive home first, but I'll be back." he said.

I nodded. Edward then got out of his seat and walked around slowly to the passenger side. He opened the car door and I stepped out. As soon as I got to the front of the car, Charlie came outside.

"Where have you been?" he quickly asked.

"Sorry dad, I was at the Cullen's house. I wanted to help them out with something and they wanted to introduce me to some of their friends." I looked down slightly, and Charlie looked at us in suspicion, almost glaring at us.

His look softened and he sighed, "Have you eaten?"

"Yes, Esme cooked some food." I replied.

"Well, come on, don't want you to keep standing in the cold." he said. He began walking back towards the house.

Edward and I slowly followed him, "I'll be back later," he said. I hugged him and quickly walked over to the house.

-------

"What are you thinking love?" Edward asked.

I sat up on my bed and looked over at Edward's direction, "It's just that...I'm always in danger everyday, every minute. I want to help you guys, but it's always the reason that I am human. A fragile, useless, human..." my voice fainted to a stop as the tears welled up in my eyes.

"Oh Bella," Edward lifted me up and turned me to face him. "You may be human but you mean the world to me. I would do anything for you. You are my life now."

"Is it enough that you would turn me into a vampire?" I asked with little hope.

"It's enough...but not today, not tomorrow. Maybe another year? I just don't want you to miss everything I had to. Plus the scent of your blood would be gone, and I wouldn't be able to see your cheeks turn rosy again." I blushed as soon as he said that and looked down. "See?" He said, "I'll never get to see you blush again."

I knew he was right, but I argued with it anyway, "Well there are positive stuff too, like me being strong, fast, and I could help you guys. I won't just be a bystander anymore."

"But will you be able to control the thirst?" he mused.

"I-I'm sure that I can."

"Are you sure? Because even my control can slip." Edward leaned in to my neck. I felt his cool breath as he got closer, my heart rapidly increased beats. Edward noticed and chuckled, he came closer and gently placed his cold lips near my throat. I shivered slightly at his touch, he raised his head and looked at me. He smiled my favorite crooked smile and asked again, "Are you still sure?"

"Y-Yes. I'm still sure."

"Well then, I might consider this vampire thing, but then again, I might change my mind. You never know, but since you are still human...it's time to go to sleep."

I looked over at the clock and sighed, "It's not that late. I don't want to sleep."

"Bella. Please go to sleep. We have school tomorrow and I don't want you to be late."

"Fine. Just don't leave until I wake up."

"I promise that I'll wait for you to wake up."

I laid down and shut my eyes. Tomorrow is a day I don't want to face.
